After decades of protests and amidst a new wave of cultural sensitivity, the NFL's Washington Redskins have agreed to change their controversial nickname. The decision is putting pressure on local youth teams to also drop Native American nicknames and mascots.
Stratford Pop Warner made the decision to drop the Redskins last month, but they say they are still trying to figure out what the new moniker will be.
The league president says that change means ordering $20,000 of new jerseys and gear. After an online fundraiser came up short, two donors have come forward to help.
"I feel like this name change will be very good just to show that we have respect for what other people believe, their beliefs and everything," said Devonte Harriot.
The league president says there have been a number of ideas but nothing has caught on so far. They are not looking for something that is currently being used by the NFL.
