Republican David X. Sullivan conceded the 5th District race for Congress to Rep. Jahana Hayes on Wednesday.
The 5th Congressional District race between Democratic Rep. Hayes and Republican former federal prosecutor Sullivan was too close to call Wednesday morning.
Around 92% of precincts are reporting, and Hayes was ahead with 52% of the vote with Sullivan at 43%.
Sullivan issued a statement Wednesday around 10 a.m. that read in part, "I am immensely grateful to the many, many people across the 5th District who supported my campaign for Congress. While I am personally disappointed in the outcome of the election last night, I respect the results and offer my congratulations to Congresswoman Jahana Hayes."
Sullivan ran on a campaign that strongly opposed the new police accountability bill.
Hayes was recently the victim of an apparent Zoom bombing where she says she was called racial slurs multiple times during a listening session with her Newtown constituents.
The former Teacher of the Year was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2018 and is the first black woman from Connecticut elected to the House.
