Thieves looking to score big this holiday are banking on checks and cash inside of mailboxes during the giving season.
Fairfield police say it's not just porch pirates that the public should be concerned about.
Police in Fairfield say more than 30 residential mailboxes have been stolen from just in the past year.
"What we've noticed just like the car thefts, they'll come into the neighborhood, they'll try to go to as many mailboxes as they possibly can, and leave the area prior to being seen," Lt. Antionio Granata says.
A man from the Bronx was recently arrested in Fairfield police say in connection to a mailbox theft case from the spring.
Police say many of the suspects are from out of state.
"We're just urging people right now to not leave mail in mailboxes overnight, put that mail in the mailbox just before your delivery person comes, or hand it to the delivery person himself," Granata says.
Police also recommend keeping the flag on your mailbox down, bringing your mail to the post office, or setting up online payments.
