Thousands of people lost power in western Connecticut following strong storms that came through during the evening commute.

Barlow and Roundhill roads in Fairfield were blocked off because a large tree went down.  Residents in the area reported hail, pounding rain, gusting winds and lightning.

"We noticed it started to get really dark and then heard a bunch of branches cracking, a couple limbs came down, looks like one of the trees in the backyard split and the next we knew the power went off," one resident said. "The road was closed, we heard a bunch of commotion outside and hail was hitting everywhere. It was really loud, it was pretty crazy."

Trees also fell on Cross Highway in Westport. One tree blocked the road and even bent a street light.

The weather also snarled the evening commute. News 12 crews were crawling as they were driving around.

Most of the power outages in the area were in Stamford and New Canaan. At one point, there were more than 3,800 customers impacted.

The weather affected Metro-North trains as well, primarily because of power issues in Stamford and Westport.  At one point, Metro-North reported delays on the New Haven line of up to an hour. One commuter told News 12 he waited for 90 minutes for a train.

The cleanup will continue into the daylight hours.
