A tight race for Connecticut?s 4th Congressional District seat is almost over, and voter turnout along with an increase in registered Democrats may decide the election.

Rep. Chris Shays, the incumbent Republican, has held the seat for 10 terms but faces a challenge from political newcomer Jim Himes, a Democrat.

Himes, a former vice president at Goldman Sachs, has hit his opponent for ?not understanding the economy? and says he has a better handle on global economics.

"I've said all along Chris Shays is a decent man and his service was honorable, but it is time for this country to move forward, restore the economy, get serious about the issues we've neglected for a long time,? Himes says.

Shays hopes to celebrate a win at the Norwalk Inn on East Avenue later tonight, while Himes and his supporters want to cheer for a victory at the Brewhouse on Marshall Street in South Norwalk.

Working in Himes? favor is the high number of newly registered Democrats in Connecticut. Of more than 217,000 new voters, 92,000 are registered Democrats and 28,000 registered Republicans.
