The first day of college can be difficult, but doctors have some tips for parents that can help their kids adjust better.
Dr. Becky Hashim, a psychologist at Montefiore Medical Center, says parents should encourage their children to make friends early on and help them get used to their new surroundings. Dr. Hashim says establishing social support is a good idea.
Students who have overcome freshman year agree with Dr. Hashim. They say once you open up and meet people, it gets easier.
Parents, too, have to deal with having an empty nest. Dr. Hashim says parents should build structure for themselves and find hobbies or activities they enjoy.
