A woman was hit and killed by an Amtrak train Tuesday afternoon, according to officials.
Fairfield police say the incident appears to have been a suicide. It happened at around 1:45 p.m.
Police say a woman laid down on the southbound tracks, but the conductor of an approaching Metro-North train saw her and had time to stop. The woman then went to the northbound track, where she was struck by the Amtrak train. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Residents and employees in the area say they heard the train blasting its horn and then coming to a screeching stop.
Investigators continue to gather information. MTA officials say all tracks are open with the exception of the track where the incident occurred.
