In honor of International Coastal Cleanup Day, Save the Sound hosted 22 cleanups statewide Saturday.
Locations included Jennings Beach in Fairfield, along Greenwich Point Park and the Shepaug Dam in Southbury.
Organizers say the cleanups prevent micro plastics from harming the environment.
"The debris that lines our streets and our sidewalks and our beaches winds up in the water," said Josh Garskof. "It kills the wildlife and breaks down into microplastics that get into our food and damage our environment."
Since the start of ICC Day, more than 17 million volunteers have collected over 350 million pounds of trash
