Westport residents rolled up their sleeves Wednesday to clean up the state's Sept. 11th memorial at Sherwood Island State Park.

Some residents say the memorial is poorly maintained and is in its worst shape since opening. A community organization that helps maintain the park, Friends of Sherwood Island State Park, says much of the disrepair has to do with state budget cuts.

Those cuts, the group says, have led to a decrease in the number of staff members helping keep the park clean.

Employees of T. Palmer Landscaping Company went to work Wednesday at no cost, snipping weeds and cleaning the memorial.

Friends of Sherwood Island State Park say they expect that there will be another community-led effort to clean the park. They add the memorial will be clean and ready in time for the upcoming Sept. 11 memorial service involving Gov. Dannel Malloy.
