A police chase triggered a lockdown at Sheila Oliver Elementary School in East Orange after a BMW crashed near the campus on Tuesday, state police said.
The pursuit began in Newark, following a home break-in 15 miles away in Fort Lee, and ended when the vehicle jumped a curb onto Columbian Park’s field, leaving tire marks.
The BMW, riding on three tires, crossed the field, hit basketball court bleachers, and caused damage, including torn turf and a broken fence. Photos from a resident showed a state trooper cruiser chasing the vehicle along North Maple Avenue. The Office of Emergency Management shared images of the damaged car and field.
Five suspects are in custody. No injuries were reported.
