A back-to-school giveaway event was held in Williamsbridge Sunday to help students get ready for the new academic year .
The event held outside the Beulah Church of God featured eight different vendors from around the city that came together to ensure children are prepared for class.
"I'm so happy that they're able to have some supplies to start their school year off right," said Zamirah El-Amin, of Community Education Council District 11.
Families were able to stock up on supplies like backpacks, pencils, pens and more. There were even virtual reality games. And of course, food.
"It's great to give back to the community. It's great to feed people. That's what I love to do is nourish folks. Everything that we served here today is all organic," said New York City chef Nichelle Wright-Cordova.
New York State Assembly Speaker Carl E. Heastie sponsored the event. His staff said they were fulfilling a specific need for the community.
"We wanted to target areas in our district where we saw a need for children and parents that needed school supplies," said Alexandrae Wint, Community Relations director for Heastie.
Heastie partnered with other local officials for another back-to-school giveaway on Sept. 5 at the YMCA in northeast Bronx.
