Witnesses of an accident this afternoon in Bridgeport say they are in shock after watching a driver hit a young child, then put him in the backseat of his car and take off. It happened near the corner of Hazelwood and Wood avenues at around 4 p.m. Witnesses say a man in a silver Mercedes hit a young boy who was riding his bicycle. The child appeared to be badly hurt, they say. The man picked the child up, put him in the back of his car and drove off before police arrived on the scene, according to witnesses. The man put the child's bike in the back of his car, too, they say. It's unclear if the driver knew the boy, or if he took him to a hospital. News 12 Connecticut has contacted Bridgeport police for more information, but has not yet received a response.
