Stratford police officials say a West Haven grandmother was found dead in her car Saturday morning in the Housatonic River.
Rescue workers pulled the car and body out of the water just off of the Birdseye boat ramp in Stratford. Police say foul play has been ruled out in the incident, but authorities do not yet know how the woman died.
Family and friends were in shock as they watched from behind a tarp as police took out Carmeta Cabrera's body from her car.
Julia Guzman says she has been best friends with Cabrera for years. Guzman says that her friend, a widow, loved to frequent the river to relax before bed.
Cabrera?s niece says the woman had just been to dinner with the family and was not seen having much to drink.
Police say a fisherman saw the car?s roof in the water and called 911 at about 6 a.m. While the incident remains under investigation, cops think that Cabrera may have parked her car in low tide, but then at about 11:30 p.m. the high tide came in and may have submerged her car.
Police say an autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
