Firefighters in Danbury say a woman is dead and two residents are in critical condition after a fire tore through a multifamily home early Wednesday morning.
The three-alarm fire occurred on Stevens Street around 12:30 a.m.
Officials say the three-family home had 11 people inside. Two people were sent to the hospital for serious burns while eight others made it out safely.
Two firefighters were hurt in the blaze, but are expected to be OK.
Danbury firefighters say they have previously been at the residence. They say they were there with inspectors two months ago and found a large amount of debris inside and outside of the home. They believe that is one of the reasons why the fire spread so quickly.
"This landlord was slow in complying with the code. He didn't want to do it, felt it wasn't necessary," says Danbury Fire Marshal Jim Russell.
Firefighters say the home is unlivable. The eight people displaced are being helped by the American Red Cross.
