A teenager who crashed his car is alive thanks in part to the actions of a Woodbridge man who lived nearby, according to police.
Justin Proto, 19, of Orange, was driving along Baldwin Road when he hit a tree and his car burst into flames near Greenway Road in Woodbridge.
Larry Dickovick says the sound of Proto's car skidding and then crashing into the tree woke him up early Saturday. Dickovick says he called 911 and ran to help Proto, who was unconscious.
"I broke the window with a rock from the stone wall, and then I tried to get him out myself," says Dickovick. "After three attempts, I couldn't. He kept getting stuck, and he was heavy."
Dickovick says he was able to help a police officer pull the teen from the car.
Proto's father says his son remains at Yale-New Haven Hospital and will need surgery.
