A Norwalk cookie business is being told it has to drop the name of one of its cookies -- "Got Milk."

The owner of Rebel Daughter Cookies, Anne Grossman, received a cease-and-desist letter Friday from the California Milk Processing Board stating she can no longer name one of her lactation cookies after a trademarked slogan.

"I wanted to give a tongue and cheek nod to the 90s slogan, 'Got Milk,'" said Grossman.

The trademark on "Got Milk" includes cookies.

Trademark Attorney Thomas Wilentz says trademarks are made to protect branding.

"Whether reasonably prudent consumers would be confused as to the source of the product or service, due to a similarity," said Wilentz.

Grossman says she understands and respects the trademark regulations and wants to turn this around by paying it forward.

"All the sales of the cookie formerly known as the cookie; 'Got Milk' will be donated to La Leche League," she said.

Lactation cookies are made with ingredients to help increase breast milk production, and La Leche League supports the same cause.

"A breast-feeding nonprofit that provides information and support to women who are looking to breastfeed," Grossman said.

The letter states Grossman has until this Friday to stop using the trademarked name, so donations will continue until then.
