Residents of a Bridgeport apartment complex are sounding the alarm on serious safety concerns in their building.

People living at the Harrison Apartments on State Street say the only elevator in their building has been out of commission for weeks, and that management has said it could be at least another six weeks before the problem is fixed.

"It's a mess," resident Gregory Franklin says. "People in their wheelchairs... you should see them. They're crawling down the stairs."

Residents say it's not the first time something like this has happened in the building and they are seeking answers.

"It's not safe right now," resident Shontae Alexander says. "They've got elderly people in here, you know?"

There are about 100 units in the five-floor building.

Residents say their main concern is the safety of elderly residents who live in the building and have trouble going up and down stairs.

"The way that they treat people these people here is terrible," Doris Morales says. "They've got walkers, they live on the fourth floor or fifth floor.... and they have to go up and down those stairs? That's not fair."

The property owner, Konover Residential, didn’t provide a timeline on when the elevator might be fixed.

"The management and ownership teams are working collectively to resolve the issue," their statement reads. "Our focus is on our residents and the operational needs of our community at this time.”
