Three abandoned kittens have a second chance at life thanks to PAWS Animal Shelter in Norwalk and New Canaan Animal Control.
Animal control officers say the kittens were found Saturday tucked into a Calvin Klein shoebox at the post office on Locust Avenue in New Canaan.
They were less than a week old and had not yet opened their eyes. They are recuperating at PAWS.
"Clearly, the person that chose to leave them there wanted them to be found. They could have been left in the woods to die on their own," said Allyson Halm, a New Canaan Animal Control officer.
The shelter had to suspend intake in March due to the pandemic, but volunteers say they are now accepting surrendered animals again. They say kittens this small need to be bottle-fed every two to three hours, and even then, they might not make it without their mother.
The kittens will be spayed and neutered at 3 months old to prevent more unwanted litters.
New Canaan police are investigating the incident. Anyone that would like to provide a home for an animal in need can contact PAWS.
