A woman says she was detained in the Milford courthouse after Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents stormed the building Thursday.
Ana Lucero says she was briefly detained and handcuffed after she refused to give her name or show her ID to ICE agents. Once she did show her ID, she says she was released.
“It was terrible, this is the first time that happened to me like that with police or immigration,” says Lucero.
Activists say the woman who agents were looking for was at the courthouse earlier in the day, but she left before the agents arrived.
John Lugo, community organizing director of Unidad Latina en Accion, tells News 12 that activists at the courthouse tried to prevent ICE from making arrests inside the Milford courthouse on West River Street Thursday around 9 a.m.
“This place, people are trying to prove their innocence and if you try to stop them the process, that's not going to help anyone, it’s not going to help the judicial process it's not going to help anybody and it’s going to create fear in the community,” says Lugo.
ICE confirmed to News 12 it was conducting enforcement activities in the vicinity of the Milford courthouse Thursday, but it did not discuss specifics.

Advocates say they are calling on the Connecticut Judicial Branch to ban ICE from Connecticut courthouses.

A New Haven high school student was arrested on the steps of the same courthouse in September.
