The Americares Foundation in Stamford is busy getting ready for this year's hurricane season.
Americares had a huge
response when Hurricane Harvey hit Houston this time last year. Since then, the nonprofit has delivered 150 aid shipments and filled an estimated 157,000 prescriptions for those impacted.
"We got in medicines and vaccines on a very urgent basis," says Dr. Anne Peterson, vice president of Americares Global Programs. "We looked at partners who needed to have help getting their access restored. We did things like vaccination campaigns at football games."
Peterson says the nonprofit in January was already holding boot camps for medical aid groups, figuring out what supplies needed to be replenished. And even though Americares keeps the Stamford warehouse stocked, it also pre-positions supplies up and down the coast.
Americares is now shifting its focus in Texas toward the psychological trauma and long-term effects brought by Harvey.
