Amtrak service between New York Penn Station and New Haven Station has been restored Wednesday after a freight train derailed alongside Bruckner Boulevard in the Bronx Tuesday.

Amtrak tells News 12 that freight train service was cancelled because they’re having issues with the overhead wires.

News 12 is told those wires, which caught on fire at the Oak Point Rail Yard, are very important because they provide electricity for the train cars to run.

Amtrak says service is cancelled on the Northeast Corridor between New York and New Haven, in both directions.

Flames and smoke burned for about 2.5 hours Tuesday. Firefighters were on scene, but the smoke eventually went out on its own. It seems it was an isolated situation on that freight track. Luckily nothing else sparked or spread to other trains and wires.
News 12 is still waiting to hear from Amtrak as to what caused the fire. No injuries were reported.
