The city of Bridgeport is warning unsuspecting drivers that a local business allegedly sold bogus license plates and registrations.
When the fake license plates began showing up all over the city, Bridgeport police and the Department of Mother Vehicles became suspicious.
Their investigation eventually led them to a business on Grand Street, where police say a company called GRS Tint Shop was selling bogus plates to unsuspecting drivers.
Emergency Management Director Scott Appleby says the city is warning people about the scam as a matter of public safety.
"The main focus that we want to really talk about to our community is to be aware of these types of scams, that they are illegal," Appleby says.
Police say they made an arrest in connection with the scam, but say the case is still under investigation. They say the business was selling the bogus plates and phony registrations for between $400 and $600 each.
Authorities say they believe there are likely many bogus plates still in circulation. They urge the unsuspecting drivers who may have one to immediately contact police.
Police say any driver who may have a bogus plate can turn it in without fear of penalty, as long as they do not show up in an unregistered vehicle.
