The city of Bridgeport held a ceremony Friday that marked 10 years since two firefighters were killed in the line of duty.
Firefighter Mitch Baik and Lt. Steven Velasquez died of smoke inhalation as they fought a house fire on Elmwood Avenue in 2010.
The two firefighters searched the home to make sure nobody was inside when they themselves became trapped. The two sent out mayday calls to their fellow firefighters who rushed to help them, but tragically it was too late.
State and local leaders joined the men's family members in paying their respects during the ceremony.
Mayor Joe Ganim on Friday called the firefighters "heroes of the highest order."
