(01/04/07) GREENWICH ? In terms revealed Thursday, Royal Caribbean Cruises has agreed to pay more than $1 million to the estate of a man who disappeared from his honeymoon cruise in the Mediterranean.
The Florida-based company will pay $950,000 to the estate of George Allen Smith IV, who disappeared in 2005. They will also reimburse his widow, Jennifer Hagel Smith, $110,000 in legal fees. Although the settlement was reached in June, the terms of the agreement weren?t disclosed until Thursday.
The agreement will be filed Thursday in Greenwich Probate Court, which must give the green light to the deal. Hagel Smith says the deal also gives her access to records kept by Royal Caribbean. These include vessel logs, security reports, door activity records, photographs, witness statements and communications with the FBI. The FBI has been investigating the disappearance. However, no one has been arrested and Smith?s body has never been recovered.
