A viral TikTok video exposing an alleged car insurance scam has sparked a surge in dashcam sales, with many drivers now looking to protect themselves from similar situations.

The video, which shows a seemingly staged accident that was caught on a driver’s dashcam, helped lead police to investigate the scammers. TikTok users even joined the search, tracking down the vehicle and suspects involved.

"We used to get like two or three cameras a week, and now two or three cameras a day is regular after that video," said Saddam Aljessi, the manager and owner of Next Level Sound & Security on Atlantic Avenue.

AAA says dash cams are the best tool to protect yourself against insurance scams and even legitimate accidents.

If considering buying a dash cam, Aljessi says you should look for one that records clear video both during the day and at night, and install a camera in the front and the back of your car. He also says the camera should be wired into the vehicle, rather than plugged into the cigarette lighter.

The National Car Insurance Crime Bureau says that women and elderly people are more likely to be targeted for these kinds of scams.
