Vandals knocked over dozens of headstones at Old St. Francis Cemetery in Torrington in the last week, police say.
About 40 of them have been toppled altogether. The first 30 went down last Tuesday, police say, and workers found 10 more a week later.
"I don't know what the motive is at this point," says Lt. Bart Barown, of the Torrington Police Department. "There's no evidence to how it's any specific headstones. It's just random throughout the cemetery."
The cemetery association is looking into the total cost of damages -- which will likely be expensive.
Kathleen Persechino says vandals struck the headstone of her grandparents a few years ago.
"They don't realize what they do to the families," she says of the vandals.
She checked on her grandparents' graves Wednesday and found both to be OK.
"Thank God," she says.
Police are looking for surveillance video from nearby businesses to try and catch the suspects.
