In light of the deadly Minnesota bridge collapse, many drivers are wondering about the safety of bridges in southwestern Connecticut.

Officials say the Minneapolis bridge was deemed ?structurally deficient? as early as 1990. Now, News 12 Connecticut has learned the Moses Wheeler Bridge along I-95 has an alarmingly low rating. The bridge connects Stratford to Milford.

Department of Transportation officials say the super structure, or the support system for the bridge, rates a 3 on a scale of 0-9, with 0 being the poorest condition. However, DOT officials maintain that despite the poor ratings, the bridge is safe.

Many drivers say they usually think twice before crossing the Moses Wheeler. Some say they try to avoid crossing it altogether.

?The bridge does have multiple safety redundancies built into it,? says one DOT official. ?It would have to take a series of catastrophic events to have a critical failure of that structure.?

There are plans to rebuild the entire bridge. However, the DOT does not yet have a timeline for that project.
