A severe cold spell hit the Bronx Thursday as residents sought out heat and others braved the bitter temperatures with layers of clothing.
Meteorologists say the unbearable temperatures are going into single digits, but with the wind chill it will feel even colder.
The city's Department of Emergency Management advises residents to protect against the bitter cold, which can cause life-threatening health conditions. The department says residents should wear a hat, hood or scarf, since most heat is lost through the head.
They also advise being vigilant about keeping clothing dry. If a layer gets wet, they say remove it.
