Rhone Apparel, a high-end fitness clothing startup born in New Canaan, plans to move into a bigger headquarters in Stamford, its founders say.
Nate Checketts, a co-founder and New Canaan native, says the company's new home will be inside a vacant piano factory. Along with the move, he says the company plans to expand from 15 employees to 25 by late summer or early fall.
Checketts and his brother-in-law founded Rhone after an insult about a smelly shirt, he says.
"My older sister doesn't hold anything back, so she said, 'That shirt stinks,'" Checketts explains. "I said, 'I just washed it, I haven't worked out in it yet, it can't possibly stink.'"
After the encounter, Checketts and his brother-in-law began researching anti-microbial fabrics, he says. They discovered that weaving silver into cloth can kill off the smell of sweat, a technique they used to start Rhone.
