Starting today, there are some major closures on I-95 in Westport due to a construction project.

The closures are going to impact I-95 near Exit 17 and will take place over the next month.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation says the I-95 South off-ramp at Exit 17 will be closed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to allow construction crews to pre-split rock and remove loose rock. The DOT says the I-95 South on-ramp at Exit 17 as well as both the north and southbound sides of I-95 near Exit 17 will be closed periodically. The closures will be no more than 15 minutes. Blasting of rock will take place at that time.

The DOT says the work is being done to improve the safety of the roadway.

The DOT has the following detour in place:

If you're taking I-95 South, you'll need to get off Exit 18 and take the Sherwood Island Connector to Route 1. You'll take Route 1 for around 4.5 miles until you get to Riverside Avenue.

The closures are expected to take place through Oct. 27.
