No plea was entered in Milford Superior Court Tuesday for a man accused of trying to kill his mother.
Instead of a plea, the attorney for 21-year-old Charles Weber III, of Orange, asked for a competency evaluation, saying he wanted to see what that revealed before moving forward with a defense strategy.
According to the newly unsealed arrest warrant, Weber called police a week prior to his arrest claiming that he was schizophrenic and did not feel safe. It also states that in the early morning on Feb. 5, Weber's father awoke in bed to his wife screaming and his son standing over her, stabbing her with a butcher knife. Police say she suffered serious wounds to the face, head, chest and hands.
In court, defense attorney Vito Castignoli said that Weber is on medication and under psychiatric evaluation at Garner Correctional Institution. Family members say Weber has a history of mental health issues.
Weber's father and younger siblings attended the court hearing. They asked to be removed from a protective order so they can visit Weber while he's in custody. His mother remains on the protective order. She's now out of the hospital and recovering at home.
Weber is due back in court in April following the evaluation. He is facing charges of attempted murder and assault.
