A cafe in Milford is pivoting in the pandemic by offering a
subscription service for board games.
Since 2018,
Hawkwood Game Cafe has been Milford's place to
come and try new games with friends. Owner Ryan McConnell says pandemic
guidelines have left only three, socially distanced tables for gaming inside
the cafe.
So they decided to start renting them out.
Modern big-box board games typically run between $40 and $60
to buy. Customers can join for $30 a month to borrow any of the cafe's nearly
700 different titles with no time limits.
McConnell says anyone who is not sure what you want to try
will get a recommendation from his staff.
“We really try to make it so you don't have to be deeply
embedded in board game culture to be able to get some real value out of coming
here or taking something home,” he told News 12.
McConnell says he has multi-month gift memberships ready for
the holidays.
