Milford's Svoboda shoots up leaderboard in Day 1 of US Open

Svoboda, who also qualified for next week's Travelers Championship in Cromwell, started his round with a birdie on hole one, then birdied hole six nearly rolling in for eagle.

Andy Svoboda, the club professional at Great River Golf Club in Milford, shot an even par 70 Thursday while spending some time in the top 10 during Round 1 of the U.S. Open at the Los Angeles Country Club.
Svoboda, who also qualified for next week's Travelers Championship in Cromwell, started his round with a birdie on hole one, then birdied hole six nearly rolling in for eagle.
After birdying the 10th hole, the New Rochelle native was one under for the round until a bogey on 17.
Svoboda finished tied for 28th at the closing of his round.
Defending Travelers Champ Xander Schauffele and Rickie Fowler both shot 62s, setting a U.S. Open record.
Round two continues on Friday.
