A 5-year-old New Canaan boy left the hospital Monday after surviving a near-drowning at a pool in Chelsea Piers.
As News 12 reported, the boy was a member of a summer program and was in the pool with several other children and at least two lifeguards on duty Thursday.
Authorities say lifeguards performed several rounds of CPR on the boy. Police Capt. Richard Conklin says the boy was underwater for at least four minutes.
They say though the boy initially suffered from seizures following the incident, his recovery is astounding.
"On Friday, he was taken off the ventilator, and reports say he was quickly able to ask for his mom, which is really positive," Conklin says. "This is like a modern-day miracle. I really want to give acknowledgement to a number of people along the way that helped this come about."
Police say they are still waiting to speak with one of the lifeguards who has refused to talk to them until he gets a lawyer.
