New Haven students, residents gather in solidarity with Tyre Nichols

Demonstrators said their outrage stemmed from police body camera video released by the Memphis Police Department that shows the 29-year-old Black man being kicked, punched and beaten with batons on Jan. 7 after they stopped him in his vehicle.

Students and residents came together Sunday at the New Haven Green to rally in solidarity with Tyre Nichols' family.
Demonstrators mentioned Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s comment that an injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.
They said their outrage stemmed from police body camera video released by the Memphis Police Department that shows the 29-year-old Black man being kicked, punched and beaten with batons on Jan. 7 after they stopped him in his vehicle.
Nichols died three days later.
Protesters made their voices heard, especially after the community came together back in June, when 36-year-old Randy Cox was paralyzed in the back of a police van.
Cox was in handcuffs and had no seatbelt on.
Earlier on Sunday, residents gathered at Summerfield United Methodist Church in Bridgeport to show support for Nichols' family.
Organizers said the scope of this incident is not on race, but rather on policing.
