New York City officials released a street design manual Monday, which outlines future roadway construction of pedestrian-friendly spaces throughout the city.

Officials say the idea behind releasing the plans is to get residents thinking of streets as public spaces and community gathering areas, rather than avenues of traffic and congestion. The new construction is modeled after places like Fordham Plaza in the Bronx and Carlton Avenue in Brooklyn, where vehicles are not permitted and pedestrians can walk freely and sit outdoors.

According to the guide, one place scheduled for renovation is Boston Road at East 169th Street in the Bronx, which the city would like to transform into a pedestrian plaza.

The new manual breaks down complex city regulations, including policies on lighting and street furniture. City officials say the manual will help communities design streets tailored to their areas more quickly and less expensively.
