A parasite that can cause severe stomach and bowel problems is spreading across the United States, prompting health experts to urge consumers to take extra precautions when handling fresh produce.

Dr. Steven Goldberg, chief medical officer at HealthTrackRx, said the situation is not a reason for alarm but does warrant greater care.

"This is not a cause for panic, it's a cause for caution, and also a slight change in behavior. So, if you're eating fruits and vegetables, put extra effort on washing them. For the time being, I would only consume foods that are irrigated and grown in the United States," Goldberg said.

Goldberg said symptoms typically appear about a week after eating contaminated food. Anyone who becomes ill should see a doctor and get tested, as antibiotics can be used to treat the parasite.

Foods that have been associated with the parasite include lettuce, cilantro and raspberries. Goldberg said fresh produce is most commonly affected because the parasite can hide on the surface of fruits and vegetables.

He added that frozen and cooked vegetables are generally considered safe.
