Fairfield police arrested a Bridgeport man Monday who they say led them on a chase and crashed into a squad car.
Eric Prendergast, 27, allegedly fled after an officer pulled him over for allegedly driving while on his cellphone — a traffic violation.
Police say Prendergast took off shortly after the stop. He smashed into the officer's car on Taylor Place and continued to flee down Interstate 95, according to authorities.
Fairfield officers eventually stopped him and took him into custody. They learned that Prendergast was out on parole after being released from prison 11 months ago.
A police dog helped search the car, and officers found no illegal items -- but investigators say they believe there's more to the story.
"It's clear this suspect was trying to get away from us," says Sgt. Michael Paris, of the Fairfield Police Department. "A simple traffic violation doesn't have this type of action taking place unless they're trying to get rid of something or get away from us for a reason."
Police are charging Prendergast with evading responsibility, reckless driving and engaging in pursuit, among other charges.
No one was hurt in the crash.
