Suffolk County police say a 43-year-old Dix Hills man was charged with second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of his 75-year-old father.
The shooting happened at the family’s Bruno Lane home around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Suffolk Police Homicide Det. Lt. Kevin Beyrer says Christopher Miller came downstairs with a shotgun, and when his father, John Miller, tried to take the weapon from him, Christopher shot him multiple times.
"Christopher went into his room, got a shotgun, and came downstairs,” said Beyrer. “An argument ensued between him and his father, John, and Christopher shot him multiple times."
Christopher Miller then fled, leaving the shotgun behind at the home, and hid in a shed on Seaman Neck Road.
The homeowner, where the shed is located, immediately called the police.
"He walked past the homeowner and wouldn't respond to her questions about what he was doing. And the homeowner just saw a person walk into his shed,” said Beyrer.
John Miller, also known as Jack, was a retired Suffolk County detective and a member of the Wyandanch Volunteer Fire Company.
Barbara Meaney, of Dix Hills, lives down the block and could not believe what happened.
"It's just a shock. A quiet little street, right near the school. We've lived here, nothing ever happens,” she said. "He had two children. One of them went to school with one of my kids."
Wyandanch Volunteer Fire Company Chief Jarvis Brown says J. Miller was a member of the department for more than 57 years. He says Miller served as a four time ex-chief and a two time former president.
"He was always in the fire chief's car for years,” said Meaney.
Chief Brown says those at the fire house are too distraught to go on camera at this time as they process this tough loss.
He told us in a statement, "We lost a leader, we lost a friend, and a father figure. We lost someone who was really important to the Wyandanch Volunteer Fire Company."
Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly, who worked alongside ex-Chief Jack Miller, said he was a tremendous public servant.
"That will be his lasting gift is how much he looked after others,” he said. “He was an inspirational human being."
Police say Christopher Miller was taken to the hospital for injuries he sustained in a car crash earlier this week.
He had recently been released from the hospital following that same crash.
Police say right now there is no word on a possible motive and say Christopher Miller will be arraigned at a later date.
