A Milford man faces several charges following a nearly 8-hour standoff that shut down a neighborhood Monday morning, police say.

Matthew Smith, 38, is in police custody and is accused of disorderly conduct, assault, threatening, and interfering with an officer after he barricaded himself inside a home following a domestic dispute that injured his wife.

Police closed off the road on Falmouth Street for hours after they say a woman arrived at the police station to report Smith around 3 a.m.

"I don't see too much going on in this area," says John Lebosky of Milford. "Then all of a sudden the crime scene van showed up and that's when I thought 'OK, something's going on.'"

She told police Smith threatened to kill her and burn down her family's home. The woman also said Smith punched her in the face and pulled out a knife.

Police say the couple had just recently moved to Milford and was living with family.

Officials say they knew Smith had a prior weapons conviction elsewhere and were concerned he might have a gun, and that they brought in additional resources when Smith refused to leave the home.

Police brought in crisis negotiators, a K9, as well as the Milford Police Department’s Small Unmanned Aircraft and Robot units as part of the response.

Police forced their way inside the home just after 11 a.m. and say they wanted to end the standoff before students from a nearby high school walked home.

Officials say Smith was taken into custody without incident.

"Things like this happen, but you kind of hope they don't happen in your area," says Lebosky.

Neighbors tell News 12 Connecticut they didn't know Smith since he'd just moved to Milford.

Smith is set to appear in court on Tuesday.
