Officials say a woman was shot Sunday night after fleeing from the police.
Connecticut State Police say they have taken over the investigation after 26-year-old Josephine Cepeda, of Bridgeport, was shot by police during the chase. They say Bridgeport police were chasing a stolen vehicle when the driver fled into Stratford and turned into the parking lot of 1-800-GOT-JUNK.
Police say it happened on Seymour Street and Soundview Avenue around 6:30 p.m. Surveillance video shows the stolen car being followed by multiple Bridgeport police cruisers.
Authorities say Cepeda drove into two police cruisers before getting out of the vehicle and running off on foot. During the foot chase, troopers say a Bridgeport police officer opened fire, hitting the woman.
"I firmly stand behind the actions of the Bridgeport police officers involved in this incident last night," says Bridgeport Police Chief AJ Perez. "I firmly stand behind them."
He says Cepeda is known to his officers and has a history of drug and prostitution charges.
State police say the suspect was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. They say no Bridgeport officers were hurt in the incident and have not released the names of the officers involved.
Cepeda is expected to be arraigned on several charges including larceny, evading, and assault once she is released from the hospital.
