The high-profile arrest of Robert Durst is being watched closely in southwestern Connecticut, where the real estate heir has a connection to a Bridgeport organization.

The Center for Family Justice is an organization in Bridgeport that focuses on helping victims of domestic violence. The nonprofit has a safehouse called Kathie's Place, which is named after Kathleen Durst, Robert Durst's wife who went missing more than 30 years ago.

President Deb Greenwood says a former staff member, Gilberte Najamy, was a good friend of Kathleen Durst, and wanted to name the safehouse after her. Kathie's Place serves as a confidential home where people can seek refuge and escape their abusers.

According to Greenwood, Kathleen Durst was at Najamy's house the night of her disappearance. News 12 is told that Kathleen left after getting into an argument with her husband over the phone. Greenwood claims that Kathleen Durst was a victim of domestic violence and was looking to leave the relationship.

Durst faced a judge Tuesday on gun and drug charges following his arrest in New Orleans over the weekend, on an extradition warrant from the Los Angeles Police Department. Prosecutors say more than a quarter-pound of marijuana and a loaded gun were found in his hotel room.

Murder charges were also filed against Durst in the 2000 murder of his friend, Susan Berman.

Durst was arrested the evening before the finale of "The Jinx," an HBO documentary series on his life.
