Norwalk officials say a long fight surrounding an Islamic center's desire to build a mosque on Fillow Street is over.
The Norwalk Common Council approved a nearly $2 million settlement at a meeting last night to help the Al Madany Islamic Center find a different location to build a mosque. The city has agreed to pay the Islamic center for damages and legal costs in the dispute. Norwalk Common Council members believe the settlement saved the city millions of additional dollars by avoiding going to court.
Some Norwalk residents, citing the potential for increased traffic, say they agree with the city's decision.
A spokesperson for the Al Madany Islamic Center has said the Islamic center also is pleased with the settlement. The city has suggested at least four other locations for the new mosque.
