Stamford city officials announced Wednesday 20 police officers will be laid off Friday to help close the city?s budget gap.
Stamford Police Chief Brent Larrabee says public safety will be compromised as a result of the layoffs.
"We're going to lose investigators, we're going to lose people who are now doing jobs that are directed toward child safety,? Larrabee says.
The city says the layoffs will save about $900,000 in the next fiscal year. But according to Larrabee, the city has already spent more than $3 million in training and equipping the 20 officers.
Joe Tarzia, who is on the city finance board, says the police union could have made concessions that would have prevented layoffs.
