BRUTAL COLD: The coldest air in years has arrived. The air comes straight out of Siberia, traveling the last seven to 10 days to reach the Northeast. Low temperatures are expected to dip below 10 degrees overnight, with feels-like temperatures below zero.
TUESDAY: Layering and covering up will be key out the door in the morning, especially for the kids heading back to school. With the coldest feel expected in three years, make sure the heavy-duty winter jackets are ready, alongside gloves, hats and scarves. Also, have the winter boots ready because there will be plenty of icy spots with road salt becoming ineffective and any melted snow refreezing.
INTO WEDNESDAY: The core of the cold settles in through the day Tuesday, with high temperatures struggling to even reach the upper teens. It will feel no better than the single digits by about 3 p.m. Tuesday night and Wednesday will be near carbon copies. An isolated flurry can't be ruled out Tuesday night as a coastal storm forms well offshore, bringing once-in-a-lifetime snows to the Gulf Coast and Carolinas. Feels-like temperatures will be below zero into Wednesday morning and single digits to near-10 degrees Wednesday afternoon.
LATER THIS WEEK: A slow recovery begins Thursday, back into the upper 20s, and then 30s for Friday and into the weekend. Another coastal storm is possible Friday but is again expected to remain offshore as the pattern remains "too cold to snow" for the area. Next opportunity for rain or snow is not until the end of the weekend.
