Swimmers kicked off the rescheduled Swim Across the Sound marathon Monday morning, departing Captain's Cove Marina in Bridgeport on a 15-mile trek to Port Jefferson, New York.
Poor weekend weather forced organizers to postpone the original event over the weekend.
The rain date involved only solo swimmers. Twenty relay teams missed out because the rescheduled event lacked enough support crews to follow their route.
Heather Roka, who is from Fort Myers, Florida, says she learned of the event while training in Connecticut to cross the English Channel.
"I started swimming when I was 10, and then I've pretty much been swimming ever since," she says.
The event raised money to support cancer patients in the community.
