Photographers from the Associated Press were there to capture the moments that will make 2020 the unforgettable year that it was.

Many of the photos highlighted in their annual roundup of the year’s most provocative images focus on the coronavirus pandemic, that touched each continent and affected billions of lives.

Other images focus on the social justice uprising that was sparked after the police-custody death of George Floyd in May.

There are also images of President Donald Trump, who campaigned across the country amid the pandemic, but fell short of being reelected.
