Abilis, a nonprofit that helps people in lower Fairfield County with disabilities from birth and throughout life, held its 19th annual “friend-raising” run/walk on Sunday.
"We've been around for almost 73 years and [we are] really the premiere provider in this area," said Amy Montimurro, president and CEO of Abilis.
The nonprofit selected 23-year-old Sam Parks as this year's Walk/Run for Abilis Ambassador.
"I was at work, and they came and surprised me with that, so I was very pleased and very honored to become this year's ambassador. It's really been a treat to become that," said Parks.
Parks is a great example of what is possible with the help of the nonprofit. Abilis played a big role when Parks found independent housing and an internship at Stamford Hospital.
"Achieving all of his hopes and dreams and we're just here to support him and make sure he has everything he needs for a full and meaningful life," said Montimurro.
