The MTA has announced a major climate resiliency project aimed at protecting a stretch of Metro-North's Hudson Line that has been impacted by flooding and mudslides in the past.

The project will focus on the rail corridor between Spuyten Duyvil and Hastings-on-Hudson and will include improved drainage systems, better water flow infrastructure and reinforced retaining walls designed to reduce storm damage.

MTA CEO Janno Lieber said the corridor's location between the Hudson River and steep hillsides makes it especially vulnerable to flooding and mudslides.

The Greystone train station in Yonkers, which was heavily impacted by Hurricane Ida in 2021, is among the areas included in the project.

According to the MTA, runoff from Warburton Avenue caused a mudslide that shut down tracks for several days following the storm.

"It made us all quite aware we had so much more to do," said State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, recalling the damage Ida caused in the area.

Residents near Greystone Station welcomed the investment.

"I don't really think that climate change is on everyone's list, when it should be because it affects all of us," said Yonkers resident Sewar Alra Badi.

MTA officials say construction is expected to begin in 2029.
