A New Jersey couple is still struggling nearly one year after a hit-and-run accident left a man permanently disabled. 

James Lane says he was crossing the street while walking alone here at the intersection of Clinton and Fairfield avenues, around 6 p.m. on Jan. 15, when a dark sedan came towards him.

Lane says the car struck him, then backed up and hit him a second time, crushing his left leg and leaving several bones throughout his body shattered. Lane says he was hospitalized for over a month.

His wife Jessica says the rehabilitation left him unable to work. She says she has also lost her job because she needs to care for her husband.

The couple says things have gotten so bad, they can't even afford the basics. They say all they want this holiday season is to have food in the refrigerator and peace in their hearts.
